Why Adopt?

Lots of wonderful animals can be found at shelters or rescue groups throughout the country. Any one of these animals can change your life for the better by offering companionship and unconditional love.

Adoption Is a Life-Long Commitment
We want every adoption to be a forever relationship, where both the new family and the animal enjoy happy, rewarding lives together. A successful match is when your home and lifestyle are a good fit with the needs of the animal, and their temperament and activity level are what you're looking for in a companion.

A dog who needs lots of exercise and personal engagement, for instance, will be very unhappy if left alone and/or crated for long hours while you're at work, or isn't taken on frequent, lengthy walks. A shy cat will be distressed and anxious in a home with highly active pets and people. Consequently, these animals may act out in ways that are disruptive to your household, or even become physically ill. Some pets can live well into their teens and many may have special needs as they get older, such as medication, frequent checkups, etc., just like people. All these things, including the joy of having a loyal friend, should be factored in before you decide to take on this responsibility.

It's easy to fall in love with a sweet face at the shelter, but it's in everyone's interest to carefully consider how your new friend will integrate into your home.

How Do I Adopt?
Visit the shelter and spend some time interacting with the animal. To make the best adoption match, our staff and volunteers will discuss your past experiences with pets, your reasons for adopting, and other aspects of your lifestyle. You must bring all family members to meet the new companion and bring your current dog(s) to meet a new dog.

Can I "reserve" a dog or cat?

There are many times that multiple people are interested on the same animal, or someone isn't able to visit the shelter right away. We unfortunately are not able to hold animals for potential adopters nor can we accept a deposit or partial payment. If you'd like to adopt an animal, you must be present at the shelter to apply for and be approved for adoption, and pay the fee in full.

Please note that HSNB reserves the right to deny adoptions. Our priorities are the health, safety and future well-being of the animals in our care and the health, as well as safety and expectations of people hoping to find an animal companion.
